Sunday 20th May 2018 Riga Half Marathon No 7 Latvia

Sunday 20th May 2018 No 7

Our first time in Riga and our first time in Latvia , and what a brilliant place it is.The weather was lovely the flowers were out , plenty of bars , restaurants and shops . It is small compared to other cities we have visited but plenty too see and easy to get around . The high light for me was Riga Central Market, one of the biggest in Europe .  The main structures of the market are five pavilions constructed by reusing old German Zeppelin hangars . The market is 72,300 square meters wide with more than 3,000 trade stands. Everything was on sale from 400 euro tins of Caviar to home made 3 euro slippers .

The Riga Marathon is a relatively new tradition , but it now attracts top professional athletes and is the only race in Northern Europe with a Bronze IAAF label and is hoping to achieve Gold label by welcoming 35.000 participants from 70 countries . The economic impact for 2017 was calculated at 4.5 million Euros , attracting 4000 runners from overseas generated 2.5 million Euros. Each overseas runner brings 1.2 travel companions staying in Latvia for an average of 3.4 days .

35,000 participants

Riga is a fairly small city and the route covered most of it crossing the river twice and going through the Old Town . What I really liked about this event was it also included a Marathon a 10k and a 6km . Every race was competitively run but the shorter distances allowed families and children to take part . The event started at 8.30 am and ran through till 4 pm with closed roads for the whole time so we had a lovely traffic free afternoon after our race finished .

The 21k route

We are in the Rochdale Harriers vests , often mistaken for the German Flag .

On the route

Fiercely contested 10k

Relaxing afternoon

Lovely City

Well done Jackie

BREXIT CHALLENGE

Before I start I just want to raise the question of Brexit and I will try not to mention it  again , if that's possible! We wouldn't be doing it if not for Brexit .So lets say it was inspired by Brexit . I have learned so much from Brexit that I didn't know before . There are 28 members of the European Union , could I name them all , not a chance . Can I now , yes I think so .There are 19 countries in the Euro Zone , could I name them , no way , can I now errr probably not . I have a fair grasp now of the single market and how it works and I get why trade deals are so complicated and important . In fact I am now more European than I ever was .        So why are we doing it ? Because we can for a start , we were very lucky to sell our business after 25 plus years in 2007 just before the financial crisis of 2007-2008 . We now run a small online retail business from home which gives us a small income , but also bags of free time . Lucky us , b...

Saturday 9th June 2018 Helsinki Half Marathon No 8 Finland

Saturday 9th June 2018 No 8  Richard 01:56.36 Jackie 02:19:02 We knew very little about Finland before we went . I now know it is very expensive the 3rd most expensive country in the EU , nearly everyone speaks English , it has a population of 5.5 million with 1.5 million living in Helsinki .    It was one of the smaller events we had entered with 2211 runners which made registration and getting to the start more relaxed . Also there was less demand for the toilets !! I loved the course it followed the coast line and harbor area along tarmac  paths perfect for running . Everything about this event was well organized , the start and finish areas, the drink stations, and the t-shirt was the best quality yet  .The results were instantaneous and detailed and included a finish line photo. My only problem was I had my first Marathon the weekend after and I definitely let it play on my mind .             ...
