I hope to do this again . It was my first attempt at a marathon distance and I want another go. It was small and local , we were taken by bus to the start and the course which was 100% trail went through forest before picking up the River Neris which we followed as it wound its way towards Vilnius . There were only two water stations at 14km and 27km so it was important to carry extra water . No other kit was needed as the trail was well marked . Despite this I still managed to take a wrong turn , my fault due to lack of experience , head down I carried straight on missing clear markers . My strava  which shows a moving time of 6hr 4 mins and a distance of 45.6 km at 8 min km makes better reading than the official results . I was totally knackered at the end and was struggling but at no time did I feel like quitting and look back on it now as a big achievement . I found the trail harder than running on the road but the whole thing had a sense of adventure . Hats off to the guys doing the 82km route who passed me offering encouragement .

BREXIT CHALLENGE

Before I start I just want to raise the question of Brexit and I will try not to mention it  again , if that's possible! We wouldn't be doing it if not for Brexit .So lets say it was inspired by Brexit . I have learned so much from Brexit that I didn't know before . There are 28 members of the European Union , could I name them all , not a chance . Can I now , yes I think so .There are 19 countries in the Euro Zone , could I name them , no way , can I now errr probably not . I have a fair grasp now of the single market and how it works and I get why trade deals are so complicated and important . In fact I am now more European than I ever was .        So why are we doing it ? Because we can for a start , we were very lucky to sell our business after 25 plus years in 2007 just before the financial crisis of 2007-2008 . We now run a small online retail business from home which gives us a small income , but also bags of free time . Lucky us , b...

LETS GET GOING

I  have done a blog that covers information about the trips . This is primarily for anyone who fancies trying one . My sister has expressed an interest , new to running and on her second park run (33 mins), she wants to build up to a half marathon sometime next year , so if anyone fancies checking out the info it's all here.                                      ricardoandjackiechallenge.blogspot.com So far we have entered Clonakilty in Ireland , Malta , Paris , Berlin, Sofia, Helsinki and Porto , so a few to go yet . The rest of this blog will be in diary from updating events as we go along . Hope you enjoy it .                 We  have pledged £10.00 for any half marathon I do in over 2 hrs and 2 hrs 15 mins for Jackie and £50.00 for any country I miss . Below are our previous and updated  half marathon results . Richard...

Saturday 9th June 2018 Helsinki Half Marathon No 8 Finland

Saturday 9th June 2018 No 8  Richard 01:56.36 Jackie 02:19:02 We knew very little about Finland before we went . I now know it is very expensive the 3rd most expensive country in the EU , nearly everyone speaks English , it has a population of 5.5 million with 1.5 million living in Helsinki .    It was one of the smaller events we had entered with 2211 runners which made registration and getting to the start more relaxed . Also there was less demand for the toilets !! I loved the course it followed the coast line and harbor area along tarmac  paths perfect for running . Everything about this event was well organized , the start and finish areas, the drink stations, and the t-shirt was the best quality yet  .The results were instantaneous and detailed and included a finish line photo. My only problem was I had my first Marathon the weekend after and I definitely let it play on my mind .             ...
