Sunday 24th February 2019 Split Half Marathon  No 25 Croatia

We were unable to find a flight to Split from Manchester in February so we combined Verona and Split and drove down the Dalmatian Coast . The road was spectacular and easy driving which is a good job as it was just under 800km. Its a toll road which I don't mind if it means good driving conditions . Snow capped mountains lined the route and we passed through many tunnels the longest being over 5 km . The weather in Split was equally as good as Verona when we arrived but the locals seemed to suggest it was a bit freakish for the time of year as the event the year before was run in snow . We found a video online that confirmed this . Split  seems on the up the harbour is full of expensive boats and it was making the most of "Game of Thrones" shooting some scenes in the town. The new Abba Movie was also filmed on an Island just off the coast called Vis

.
The day before the race we got a weather warning of very high winds from our Airbnb host .

"Dear Richard and Jackie,
Watch out tomorow. Meteoalarm is turned on. Luckily, the wind will get easy till the Start of the halfmarathon."

It was a strong cold wind blamed on Russia and it was still windy on the day of the race . The temperature had dropped significantly , which was great news for us as many of the runs were in temperatures a tad too hot for our tastes . So it was hat and gloves on and a warm up to keep out the cold before the start .

Despite a head wind and uphill start for the first 5km the cooler weather benefited us both and I ran my best time for quiet a while just missing out by 40 seconds from getting under 2hrs. Jackie was comfortably under her target of 2hrs 15 mins .
This was another really nice route passing through the town and along the coast and also included a lap round the local stadium track  which was fun  . It was fairly hilly compared to some and the last 8km was through a forest at the top end of the town . The electronic results board was also a nice touch .

A large group from Montenegro

We always get cravings for something stodgy after the race

BREXIT CHALLENGE

Before I start I just want to raise the question of Brexit and I will try not to mention it  again , if that's possible! We wouldn't be doing it if not for Brexit .So lets say it was inspired by Brexit . I have learned so much from Brexit that I didn't know before . There are 28 members of the European Union , could I name them all , not a chance . Can I now , yes I think so .There are 19 countries in the Euro Zone , could I name them , no way , can I now errr probably not . I have a fair grasp now of the single market and how it works and I get why trade deals are so complicated and important . In fact I am now more European than I ever was .        So why are we doing it ? Because we can for a start , we were very lucky to sell our business after 25 plus years in 2007 just before the financial crisis of 2007-2008 . We now run a small online retail business from home which gives us a small income , but also bags of free time . Lucky us , b...

Saturday 9th June 2018 Helsinki Half Marathon No 8 Finland

Saturday 9th June 2018 No 8  Richard 01:56.36 Jackie 02:19:02 We knew very little about Finland before we went . I now know it is very expensive the 3rd most expensive country in the EU , nearly everyone speaks English , it has a population of 5.5 million with 1.5 million living in Helsinki .    It was one of the smaller events we had entered with 2211 runners which made registration and getting to the start more relaxed . Also there was less demand for the toilets !! I loved the course it followed the coast line and harbor area along tarmac  paths perfect for running . Everything about this event was well organized , the start and finish areas, the drink stations, and the t-shirt was the best quality yet  .The results were instantaneous and detailed and included a finish line photo. My only problem was I had my first Marathon the weekend after and I definitely let it play on my mind .             ...
