Sunday 31st March 2019 Constanta Sand Marathon  Romania No 28

So this is our final run , Romania was the only country in the EU that we had not visited and run in . We had a late flight from Liverpool and with the 2hr time difference we arrived in Bucharest at 02.55 so it was 4 am when we arrived at the hotel . We were up for breakfast at 9am as we had to catch the train to Constanta on the shores of the Black Sea . Buying a ticket late all seats had sold out and we had to stand for the 2.5 hr journey . It was with great relief that we arrived at our hotel , it was 4 star but very inexpensive and we weren't disappointed . The room was lovely and  had a large balcony overlooking a lake , we had 3 nights here and a chance to relax after all the traveling.

Constanța is a city on the shores of the Black Sea, in southeastern Romania. Its long history,  goes back over 2,000 years.

Having a beach length of 8 miles, Mamaia an administrative district of Constanța, is the largest and most modern resort on the Romanian coast,  and  attracts many visitors in the summer.

This 8 mile stretch of beach is the home of the Constanta Sand Marathon now in its 6th year . Its an out and back 10.5km up the beach and back with the marathon runners doing it twice . There is also a 10km distance and a 3km race . We checked out the route the day before and it looked really difficult , running in soft sand is not easy . The first 4km was hard on the legs but after that we were running on compacted sand and it got easier . Of course we had another 4km on soft sand at the end . Hats off to the marathon winner who came in just after me .We were the only British entrants and I managed 3rd in my age category whilst Jackie was 4th. It was a good event which we enjoyed and it was emotional finishing all 28 .

BREXIT CHALLENGE

Before I start I just want to raise the question of Brexit and I will try not to mention it  again , if that's possible! We wouldn't be doing it if not for Brexit .So lets say it was inspired by Brexit . I have learned so much from Brexit that I didn't know before . There are 28 members of the European Union , could I name them all , not a chance . Can I now , yes I think so .There are 19 countries in the Euro Zone , could I name them , no way , can I now errr probably not . I have a fair grasp now of the single market and how it works and I get why trade deals are so complicated and important . In fact I am now more European than I ever was .        So why are we doing it ? Because we can for a start , we were very lucky to sell our business after 25 plus years in 2007 just before the financial crisis of 2007-2008 . We now run a small online retail business from home which gives us a small income , but also bags of free time . Lucky us , b...

Saturday 9th June 2018 Helsinki Half Marathon No 8 Finland

Saturday 9th June 2018 No 8  Richard 01:56.36 Jackie 02:19:02 We knew very little about Finland before we went . I now know it is very expensive the 3rd most expensive country in the EU , nearly everyone speaks English , it has a population of 5.5 million with 1.5 million living in Helsinki .    It was one of the smaller events we had entered with 2211 runners which made registration and getting to the start more relaxed . Also there was less demand for the toilets !! I loved the course it followed the coast line and harbor area along tarmac  paths perfect for running . Everything about this event was well organized , the start and finish areas, the drink stations, and the t-shirt was the best quality yet  .The results were instantaneous and detailed and included a finish line photo. My only problem was I had my first Marathon the weekend after and I definitely let it play on my mind .             ...
