Did you know ?

In terms of the number of years held, this marathon is the oldest in Europe and the sixth-oldest in the world. The first marathon was held in 1924 and was run by 8 participants. Inspired by marathon race in the Paris Olympic games in 1924, Vojtech Braun Bukovský (a sports enthusiast and journalist) organized this marathon. The marathon takes place each year on the first October Sunday. The 94th  edition of this marathon was held on 7th October 2018 .

Oldest
  Boston        1897
  New York   1907  (revived 1935)
Greater Manchester Run 1908 (revived 2012)
The Comrades Marathon 1921 South Africa
   Kosice Peace Marathon   1924

The run starts in the center and is a big deal in Kosice and running the course it felt like the whole city was on the streets supporting us . The half marathon is one  lap and the marathon runners go round twice . There is also a race for hand bikes and inline skaters with several thousand plus taking part in total . I finished just in time to see the marathon finish and it was a brilliant finish between the men with four seconds separating the first two. 02:08:10 and 02:08:14. The first woman  finished in 02:27:14 .

We really enjoyed this event and visiting Kosice it is a small compact city but the main street is awesome with the Cathedral and roadside cafes . We had to fly from Luton which made the journey that little bit more difficult , we had our best yet Airbnb  and plan to visit again .

Saturday 9th June 2018 Helsinki Half Marathon No 8 Finland

Saturday 9th June 2018 No 8  Richard 01:56.36 Jackie 02:19:02 We knew very little about Finland before we went . I now know it is very expensive the 3rd most expensive country in the EU , nearly everyone speaks English , it has a population of 5.5 million with 1.5 million living in Helsinki .    It was one of the smaller events we had entered with 2211 runners which made registration and getting to the start more relaxed . Also there was less demand for the toilets !! I loved the course it followed the coast line and harbor area along tarmac  paths perfect for running . Everything about this event was well organized , the start and finish areas, the drink stations, and the t-shirt was the best quality yet  .The results were instantaneous and detailed and included a finish line photo. My only problem was I had my first Marathon the weekend after and I definitely let it play on my mind .                                         RESULTS FOR RICHARD MASON location time s

Saturday 9th February Domein Het Leen 21km or 42km No 23 Belgium

Trail Domein Het Leen 10km 21km 42km  Saturday 9th February 2019  Belgium  No 23 Richard 02:26:53 Jackie 02:36:58 We flew to Brussels Charleroi hired a car and drove to Gent where we were staying . The race was a trail run in the beautiful forest of the provincial domain Leen in Eeklo just half an hour from Gent . The trail run is now in its 6th year and has an entry limit of 750. The entry fee was 12 Euros and there was a choice of a mini trail (6.8km) and 1-4 laps 10.6km-21.1km-31.8km and 42.2km , leaving at various times through the day from 10am to 1pm . The half marathon which we had entered started at 11.00am and had just under 200 runners . We were the only overseas entrants but it felt very much like a home event . There was a large car park next to the start a cafe and toilets and it seemed like we were turning up to a local cross country event all very familiar . The weather was also very familiar cold  windy and showers , yes we felt at home and it was great to do a
