BREXIT CHALLENGE

Before I start I just want to raise the question of Brexit and I will try not to mention it  again , if that's possible! We wouldn't be doing it if not for Brexit .So lets say it was inspired by Brexit . I have learned so much from Brexit that I didn't know before . There are 28 members of the European Union , could I name them all , not a chance . Can I now , yes I think so .There are 19 countries in the Euro Zone , could I name them , no way , can I now errr probably not . I have a fair grasp now of the single market and how it works and I get why trade deals are so complicated and important . In fact I am now more European than I ever was .
So why are we doing it ? Because we can for a start , we were very lucky to sell our business after 25 plus years in 2007 just before the financial crisis of 2007-2008 . We now run a small online retail business from home which gives us a small income , but also bags of free time . Lucky us , but free time has to be filled ,we don't have parents alive and we couldn't have kids . You have to do something . Without going into too much detail , we considered another business start up , moving abroad , expanding the business we had and a few other after a few beers ideas . I had done two mountaineering trips , but they were expensive and over so quick and two weeks after returning it was back to square one .
Now the idea of 28 half marathon's in all 28 member states certainly fell into the after a few beers category, but the morning after we were both still keen , which is always the test  . So the idea was born . It ticked a lot of boxes , we like running , we like traveling,  we needed a challenge and this one isn't over in a couple of weeks , but 17 months . Its going to be difficult to complete , obviously its more than one a month , and we have other things on .
In a way its a celebration of cheap air fares , hotel booking apps and a wealth of information at our finger tips.A celebration of the advances in technology that even my generation is now taking for granted . I am 59 by the way ,but also an opportunity to learn more about Europe ,and see for myself its many countries and crazy history.  We are flying to Malta for £60.00 each return over a weekend . I think that's ridiculously cheap , yes we are going Ryan Air , only taking hand luggage and going out of school holidays . We are flying to Porto for less , the entry fee for the race is 10 Euros . We did Bath Half Marathon a couple of years ago £45.00 , a full tank of fuel and  one nights accommodation £££. Its sold out already this year by the way .
We are doing this for charity . A mixed reaction on this one , a bit of suspicion of the motive maybe  a bit of cynicism re-charities, but giving to charity is a personal choice not a tax , so no real issue here really .Please sponsor us .We are organizing and financing this our self's so all the money goes to charity .

Saturday 9th June 2018 Helsinki Half Marathon No 8 Finland

Saturday 9th June 2018 No 8  Richard 01:56.36 Jackie 02:19:02 We knew very little about Finland before we went . I now know it is very expensive the 3rd most expensive country in the EU , nearly everyone speaks English , it has a population of 5.5 million with 1.5 million living in Helsinki .    It was one of the smaller events we had entered with 2211 runners which made registration and getting to the start more relaxed . Also there was less demand for the toilets !! I loved the course it followed the coast line and harbor area along tarmac  paths perfect for running . Everything about this event was well organized , the start and finish areas, the drink stations, and the t-shirt was the best quality yet  .The results were instantaneous and detailed and included a finish line photo. My only problem was I had my first Marathon the weekend after and I definitely let it play on my mind .                                         RESULTS FOR RICHARD MASON location time s
